History, Memory and Community in Cistercian Normandy (12th–13th Centuries)

While the textual production of Normandy’s Cistercian abbeys has not lacked for scholarly attention, a detailed study historical writing in duchy remains to be written. This article looks small part fill this historiographical gap by examining those works produced and copied Normandy between beginning 12th end 13th centuries. In doing so, it aims shed new light on sorts texts or written White Monks. It contextualises these within culture both itself wider world, shows how Cistercians played distinctive role transmission key texts, among them universal chronicle Sigebert Gembloux (c. 1030–1112) Einhard’s Vita Karoli Magni. includes ‘reconstruction’ so-called Chronicon Gofferni.
